PRESS: Preventing, RESponding, Supporting young survivors of gender-based violence
A Project to support young survivors of sexual harassment, sexual violence and cyber violence.
A few words about the project
Through the PRESS project, we aim to respond to the growing need to support survivors of these forms of gender-based violence. PRESS is a two-year project (February 2022 – January 2024) and is being implemented with the Diotima Centre as coordinator and the Department of Communication and Mass Media of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Genderhood as partners, in collaboration with the Greek Ombudsman and the Association of Social Workers of Greece (SKLE).
Operation of support center
Basic pillar of the project is the operation of a pilot, holistic support centre for women, young girls and LGBTQ+ people (over 16 years old), who are at risk or experiencing sexual (online) harassment and violence. The centre operates in Athens and provides psychosocial support and legal/counselling assistance to survivors. It also conducts group activities for young adults and adolescents (16-17 years old), aiming at empowerment and awareness raising.
Preventive actions
Much emphasis is placed on actions to prevent sexual (online) harassment and violence. Training of media professionals is provided, aiming to increase the number of reports, mitigate victim blaming and promote a culture of consent.
Raising awareness
Κey to tackling sexual (online) harassment and violence is to raise awareness in society as a whole. In this context, two digital awareness campaigns are planned: a) on issues of consent, respect and physical boundaries aimed at young people b) on the issue of online sexual harassment aimed at the general population.
The project includes:
Training activities
Training seminars for social workers, teachers, lawyers, lawyers, mental health professionals to enhance their skills in supporting people who have experienced these forms of gender-based violence and a ToT for media professionals to remove sexist and stereotypical perceptions of sexual harassment and violence.
Research activities
Bibliographic/secondary research on sexual (online) harassment and violence and mapping of the current situation regarding its representation in the Greek media through reports, news, etc. on TV channels and digital media and development of a Good Practice Guide focusing on coexistence and healthy interpersonal relationships.
Advocacy activities
Policy proposals for measures that can be taken at national and European level based on secondary research and the needs of survivors, proposals for gender mainstreaming in news and reports on sexual harassment and cyber violence and the organisation of a roundtable on sexual harassment, consent and cyber violence.
